Well-known for roles including Wyman Morris in the revived Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Mickey Smith in Doctor Who, Noel Clarke has a star-studded career behind and in front of the camera as an actor and director.

On Who Do You Think You Are?, he traces his family history to Trinidad, uncovering roots from times of slavery.

Here’s five things you might not know about the star…

1. Joining the stage

Noel was raised by a single mother in west London and got into acting after taking classes at London’s Actors Centre.

He became famous among sci-fi fans for his role as Mickey Smith, the first black companion to travel in Doctor Who’s TARDIS.

3. Award winner

Noel won the 2003 Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Performer and the 2009 BAFTA Orange Rising Star Award.

4. Lights, camera, action

After writing the screenplay for the 2006 gritty drama Kidulthood, in which he also acted, Noel directed the sequels, Adulthood (2008) and Brotherhood (2016).

5. Open doors

Noel has his own production company, Unstoppable Entertainment. Unusually, it accepts unsolicited scripts from new writers to help nurture new talent.
