Cover the basics

This guide was last updated in 2009

As with any genealogical investigation, the first step is to write down everything that you already know about your dockworker ancestor.

Ask your relatives for any information that has been preserved in the family memory. There may be stories of good and bad times on the job, accidents, incidents, tales and reminiscences.

It is important to get as much precise information as possible: names and dates of your dockland ancestors, when they were employed and in what capacity. You may not be able to establish all of this information from interviewing members of your family, but you never know what clues you can uncover if only you take the time to ask.
