Maybole Ragged School, Ayrshire

A great deal of work and imagination has resulted in transforming a modest collection of documents found in an attic, into an insightful website.

These pages are part of a larger local history site dedicated to Maybole, Ayrshire. The town’s ragged school was supported by a group of townspeople to remove young strays from the streets, and educate them in the four ‘R’s. The material includes 30 detailed descriptions of individual pupils, and notebooks with minutes from school board meetings (from 1850 onwards).

You can view both transcripts and the scanned originals, and the data includes an index to children mentioned in meetings.
