Further research

This guide was last updated in 2010

Historical newspapers are often rich sources of further information on Gold Rush Migrants.

They are available online through sites such as www.genealogybank.com, www.newspaperarchive.com and Google News Archive.

There are also plenty of books on the history of the various gold rushes and many contemporary accounts and journals were published and may be available in some reference libraries. If your library doesn’t have anything in stock, they may be able to order relevant books for you.

Finally, don’t neglect the records of those who migrated to the same place at the same time as your ancestor, as they may hold the clue you seek – much like the letter written of the death of Sarah Jessica Parker’s Gold Rush ancestor by his business partner and former neighbour, John Gish. Letters like that are pure gold for researchers!
