Tithe Applotment Books

This guide was last updated in 2014

The Tithe Applotment Books were compiled between 1823 and 1838 for the purpose of assessing the rate of the Tithe, a religious tax, levied for the upkeep of the Established Church.

The Tithe Applotment Books only recorded tenants on specific types of agricultural land and so urban households are almost entirely absent from this land survey.

However, this is the most comprehensive record of households in Ireland during this early period. If you have identified your family land holding in Griffith's, you may find that an earlier generation of the family appear in the Tithe Applotment Books.

A very unreliable database of the Tithe Applotment Books is freely available online at the National Archives of Ireland's website here.
