Valuation Office Revision Books

This guide was last updated in 2014

Updated versions of Griffith’s Valuation, the Revision Books record any changes in the ownership, occupancy, size or value of a property.

These books run from the 1850s right up to the 1970s and are available in the Valuation Office in Dublin City. The books for Northern Ireland are now freely available online at www.proni.gov.uk.

If you have identified a townland address for your family, it is possible to trace their occupancy of a property back to the 1850s or forward to the 1970s. These records will illustrate when the property passed from one generation to the next, often indicating the death of the head of the family, a transfer of property through marriage or a year of emigration or eviction.

The Revision Books will also demonstrate when improvements were made to a property or when a house fell into ruin.
