Vital sources in the UK

This guide was last updated in 2009

Try to find out as much as possible from sources in the UK before your ancestor migrated, especially if you don’t know the year they left.

Check census records (1841–1901) to see when your ancestor stops appearing.

Similarly, parish records held at county record offices provide details of births and marriages before 1837.

If you can find birth and possibly marriage details but no record of a death, it may help you establish roughly when your ancestor emigrated.
